At the end this course, the learner should be able to:
1. Explain the scientific study of units of linguistics
2. Analyze phonology, phonetics and morphology
3. Describe the major structural areas of linguistics
Course Outline
• Linguistics as the scientific study of language
• The nature of human language
• Phonetics (the production and audition of speech sounds)
• Phonology (sound patterns in languages)
• Morphology (formation and internal structure of words)
• Syntax (grammatical relationships between words, phrases, and sentences)
• Semantics (the relational meaning of words)
• Pragmatics (meaning within discourse)
• Sociolinguistics (language use within speech communities)
• Languages in contact (
• Historical linguistics (the study of language change).
